Early Settlement and Founding
Bellville was established in the 1840s and named after Thomas and James Bell, early settlers who played a significant role in the development of the area. The Bell brothers donated more than 145 acres of land to establish the townsite.
In 1846, residents voted to move the county seat of Austin County from San Felipe to Bellville, recognizing the area’s central location and growing importance. The town was officially platted in 1848 by surveyor D. Charles Amthor, centered around a public square that continues to anchor the community today. Bellville quickly became a focal point for government, business, and social gatherings.
The town’s first hotel opened in 1849, signaling Bellville’s early growth as a destination for travelers, commerce, and civic life.

Austin County Jail Museum
One of Bellville’s most notable historic landmarks is the Austin County Jail, constructed in the late 1800s. The jail includes historic gallows and is known as the site of the county’s last hanging in 1901.
Today, the building operates as the Austin County Jail Museum, preserving important local history. The site received a Texas Historical Commission medallion in 1976 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, recognizing its historical significance.

Bellville’s story is closely connected to the broader history of Austin County, often referred to as the “Colonial Capital of Texas.” Nearby San Felipe de Austin served as an early center of government and commerce during Texas’ colonial period and is now preserved as a state historic site and museum.
